Balkan Mondays

A monthly Monday-evening workshop on Balkan dance and music,

Presented in collaboration with and on The premises of the

Centre des musiciens du monde

7.30 pm – 10.00 pm
$10

 

During each workshop you can dance, sing, and/or play music (for dancers)..

Whether you are a dancer, instrumentalist, or singer, and no matter what your level of experience or instrument, you are welcome to join us.

Sergiu Popa will lead the music while a guest dance teacher leads the dances.

Dance teacher:         Monika Valeva

Monika Valeva was born in Yambol, Bulgaria, in the historical region of Thrace. She has been in love with Bulgarian folklore since a child, and studied it in university, Since moving to Montreal in 2001 she has created a Bulgarian-Canadian cultural centre, founded and danced in the Bulgari dance ensemble, founded two folklore clubs, and regularly teaches Bulgarian dances.

We will focus on Bulgarian repertoire, including:

Originally from Moldova, Sergiu is now a key figure in Montreal's world-music scene. A conservatory-trained virtuoso accordionist from a Roma family dynasty of musicians, he is a specialist in the traditional music of SouthEastern Europe.

Since 1975, when Jocelyne first fell in love with folkdance, it has been the focus of her spare time and trips. She has been teaching international folkdancing at the Université de Montréal for several decades.

Benoît has been fascinated by folkdance since his boyhood days in Lac St-Jean. He was a member of several dance groups in the 1970s. After a break of more than 20 years, he has returned to dance, his passion intact, and now teaches at the Centre Communautaire de Loisir de la Côte-des-Neiges.
